Late Payment Legislation

The UK was one of the first countries in the EU to introduce legislation to promote a culture of prompt payment. That was in 1998.

Since then, in August 2002, provisions have been extended. Now, businesses can

  • claim reasonable debt recovery costs
  • benefit from simplification in calculating Statutory Interest.

SMEs can ask a representative body to challenge grossly unfair contract terms that do not provide a substantial remedy for late payment

Compensation varies in with the size of the debt:

Size of unpaid debt

Up to £999.99

£1,000 to £9,999.99

£10,000 or more

Amount due to the creditor

£40

£70

£100
